Flyers Stop the Stealers

Flyers 62-47 Oxford Stealers

For the last home game of the year and the Flyers were in no mood to lose control of their home court -  except that Oxford Stealers did not know the script and from the tip sunk a rapid 3 point basket that caught the home team on the hop.

Despite a swift reply in the form of a two point basket from player coach Knode ,the Stealers increased their lead to five with a further two baskets. This was to be the only period the Stealers had the lead.

The Flyers kept had self-confidence and knew they could respond to this initial onslaught. They went on a 15 point run starting with a long/deep three-pointer from Devon James that inspired Knode into a shooting spree. The squad fed the ball to him allowing his hot hands to rapidly sink 5 baskets and a couple of free throws that allowed the Flyers to open up a 10 point lead.

By the first quarter that 10 point lead was trimmed to five but that was the closest the Stealers got for the rest of the game.

In the second quarter the Flyers tight defence prevent the Stealers from scoring for eight minutes and restricting them to adding only a further 6 points by the half at which point the Flyers lead had stretch to 12 points 30:18

The second half continued with the Flyers in control, at one point the lead narrowed to 7 , but the Stealers could not maintain the momentum and finally the Flyers pulled out the 15 point win.

MVP for the Flyers was Devon James with 18 points and 9 rebounds – again just missing out on a double/double. Coach Knode led the way   with top scoring 20 points. Jack Price edge into double figures with 11points. Dan Marshall maintained his reputation as  the hustler of the team with 3 steals, 5 assists and 6 rebounds.

Again Knode was pleased with the squad  his main criticism being that more energy is required on defence which would have been severely exploited taxing opposition.

The result leaves the Flyers fourth in the league with a 3w-2l record. There are now three away games before the Christmas break, the most challenging of which will against the Welsh side RCT Gladiators . Next Saturday the Flyers travel to Southampton University
